Crystal meth, or “ice,” is the same drug as methamphetamine (yaba), but far more potent due to its higher purity. Ice is classified as a Category 1 psychoactive substance under Thailand’s Narcotics Act B.E. 2522 (1979). It appears as clear crystals resembling small pieces of ice, which is where its street name comes from — young people also sometimes call it “ice” among themselves as coded language, so others won’t realize what they’re referring to. Ice is expensive, costing 2,000-3,000 baht per gram, which puts people who use it at serious risk of financial hardship. Heavy users can spend as much as 20,000 baht a week on the drug — roughly 1 million baht a year.
How Ice Affects the Body and the Symptoms of Addiction
Ice affects the central nervous system, impacting thinking as well as the body’s movement and balance control. It produces feelings of alertness, euphoria, and reduced need for sleep. Some users are drawn to it because it makes them feel focused, more diligent, and more energetic at work. But in withdrawal, the opposite happens — users often experience slowed thinking, laziness, boredom, and a loss of motivation for daily life. In severe cases, this can progress to depression and suicidal thoughts.
Ice also affects the cardiovascular system, causing palpitations, high blood pressure, and irregular heartbeat, which can lead to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle and heart failure. Regular users usually learn how much their body can tolerate, but new users, occasional users, or people returning to their previous dose after a period of abstinence can easily misjudge the amount their body can handle. This can cause a fatal arrhythmia and sudden death, even without the user intending an overdose.
Some people use ice to enhance sexual arousal or performance — a practice medically referred to as “chemsex.” With continued use, the brain becomes accustomed to the drug, and in the opposite direction, once the drug wears off or is stopped, sexual function tends to decline. In men, this can present as erectile dysfunction; in both men and women, it can cause difficulty reaching orgasm (orgasmic disorder).
With yaba (regular methamphetamine tablets), users typically either swallow the pills or smoke them. Smoking has a stronger effect than swallowing because the vapor is absorbed rapidly through the lungs and capillaries directly to the brain, whereas swallowing requires digestion and absorption through the gastrointestinal tract, which takes longer. With ice, users tend to smoke it or inject it intravenously, since the substance is purer than regular methamphetamine. Intravenous injection produces the fastest and most intense effect of all, since there’s no absorption delay — the drug takes effect immediately once injected, making it the method with the highest risk of fatal overdose. Methods that produce a faster, more intense effect are generally a sign of a more severe level of addiction: users typically start by swallowing the drug, then move to smoking as tolerance builds, and finally to injection — the method that signals the most severe stage of addiction.
